Tom Taggart
I have been a lifelong resident of Bass River. I have been married to my wife Zylpha for 48 years. Our family consists of three children and their spouses. Additionally, we have one very special granddaughter. Family has and will always come first in our lives.
I have been politically involved most of my life. I ran Provincially and was unsuccessful in 1993. But that never stopped me!
I was first elected to Colchester County Council in 2008 and was re-elected in 2012, 2016, and 2020. During my twelve-plus years on Municipal Government representing the residents of West Colchester I held several different responsibilities, including eight years as Chair of the Planning Advisory Committee and eight years as a member of the Executive Committee. I represented the Northern Region of Nova Scotia as a member of the Provincial Solid Waste Committee, four years as Vice Chair and one as Chair. Additionally, I represented Nova Scotia Municipalities on the Board of Divert Nova Scotia. During my time in Municipal Governance, I feel my proudest accomplishment was being elected by my peers across Nova Scotia as one of two representatives from Nova Scotia on the board of the Federation of Canadian Municipalities. I was elected four consecutive years and sat on several different committees, most notably as Vice Chair of the Rural Caucus.

In 2021, I was first elected to the Provincial Government as a member of Tim Houston's Government. Currently I am serving my second term. My current government responsibilities are Deputy Speaker, Ministerial Assistant to the Minister of Public Works, Chair of the Standing Committee on Natural Resources and a member of the Standing Committee of Public Accounts. However, my primary responsibility is representing the residents of Colchester North. Throughout my political career I have been very passionate in advocating in support of rural Nova Scotia particularly Colchester North. I am very fortunate to have an outstanding team of one full time and two part time staff representing me and supporting the residents of Colchester North. The majority of their time is spent helping residents navigate the challenges of a large and complex government bureaucracy. We cannot claim to solve every challenge, however we do have lots of wins, and I am very fortunate with the depth of understanding and compassion with which they do their work on behalf of our residents.
We have chosen to launch this new website as a way to better inform and direct our constituents towards information and support. There are hundreds of different programs and resources that many are not aware of. This website will help you navigate that.
While it is unavoidable, I will be expressing my views or opinion on subjects, this will not be a site full of pictures of me being here and there. It is intended to allow us to better support you.
